Manhyia Palace
Ancient history and settlement.
Manhyia Palace, located in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region in Ghana, is the traditional seat of the Asantehene, the king of the Ashanti people. The palace was established in 1925 by the British as a residence for the then Asantehene, Prempeh I, upon his return from exile in Seychelles.
The construction of Manhyia Palace marked the end of British colonial conflicts with the Ashanti Kingdom, which had resisted colonial rule through several wars. The British built the palace as a gesture of reconciliation and to facilitate the administration of the Ashanti people under indirect rule.
