Larabanga Mosque
Ancient history and settlement.
Larabanga Mosque, located in the small village of Larabanga in the Northern Region of Ghana, is one of the oldest mosques in West Africa. It is believed to have been built in 1421 by Ibrahim Ayuba, an Islamic trader and missionary. According to local legend, Ayuba was guided to the site by divine intervention and instructed to build the mosque, which he did with the help of the local community.
The mosque is constructed in the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style, characterized by its use of mud and stick construction, thick walls, and wooden support beams. It features four distinctive minarets and whitewashed walls with decorative triangular patterns. The mosque is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the rich Islamic heritage and architectural ingenuity of the region.
Over the centuries, the Larabanga Mosque has undergone several restorations to preserve its structure and significance. It remains an active place of worship and a prominent pilgrimage site for Muslims in Ghana and beyond. The mosque’s historical and cultural value has made it a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors interested in its history, architecture, and spiritual significance.
